An alternator freewheel clutch, also called an overrunning alternator pulley, is a mechanism that allows the alternator to "freewheel" or coast when the engine is not running or decelerating. It essentially decouples the alternator from the crankshaft's rotational irregularities, reducing stress on the belt drive and the alternator itself.
Function:
The freewheel clutch allows the alternator pulley to turn freely in one direction (the direction the belt is driving it) and lock up in the opposite direction. This means the alternator can continue to spin (and generate power) while the engine is not running or is decelerating, reducing drag and wear on the belt and alternator.
