When used as a back up cord Air-O-Struct backing rod serves both to regulate the depth of the sealing required and to ensure that the sealants are forced against the sides of the joint during application. Airothene backing rod also functions as a bond breaker at the back of the seal preventing additional stress during movement.
The diameter of the cord should be approximately 20-25% greater than the joint width and depressed sufficiently to provide the required sealing slot dimensions.The circular sections of the backing rod provide a convex face giving an optimum seal configuration. They also overcome any twistings that can occur with square or rectangular sections
