The New York Times called Max Frisch's 1979 novella about an old man (Erland Josephson) who fights against oblivion in a village in Ticino, cut off from the rest of the world, a "brilliant parable of unfathomable significance." He, Geiser, cuts out articles on earth history and geology and pins them to the wall. By incorporating these notes into his narrative, Frisch intertwines human history with individual decay.
