SAE 40 oil is a single-grade motor oil primarily used for older gasoline and diesel engines, heavy-duty diesel engines, farm machinery, and some industrial applications. Its main purpose is to provide lubrication and protection against wear, sludge, and pollutants in engines that operate under high temperatures or have been designed for a thicker oil. Because it lacks a winter (W) rating, SAE 40 oil is thick even when cold and is not suitable for modern engines or cold climates where thinner oil is needed for startup.
