Our Story
The marula fruit is a natural resource that forms an integral part of the culture and survival of the Shangaan population in Southern Africa. As a natural, renewable food source, communities use marula fruit as a primary food source during the lean months, when staple foods are scarce. The marula fruit matures in late summer and is then wild harvested. The marula fruit itself is highly nutritious, but the nut is an even more valuable resource. The nut is tasty and nutritious, but due to the fact that it is difficult to extract from the inside of the rock-hard stony pips, it hasn’t received much commercial attention by either the local communities or businesses. The communities only fall back on harvesting the nuts during dry seasons, but otherwise, the majority of the fruits remain unused in the shades of the marula tree. This very reason has caused MOZaic Upliftment to explore different ways to use this familiar product, to help the Shangaan communities create sustainable income and improve the living conditions in rural communities. With the help of our support network in South Africa, we have rehabilitated an Old Portuguese shop in Machaila (Mozambique), from where the raw nuts are purchased from the community, stored, and cold-pressed to extract the oil. Our network of volunteers from South Africa are passionate about helping communities in Mozambique to raise their standard of living. We don’t just do projects, but walk with communities to assist, equip and expose them to economic opportunities. More than 10 different teams have already come to assist the Machaila community over the past decade. The marula oil production has developed from these cross-cultural events. With extensive research and the help of our network, a cooperation developed to help young women, mothers and widows, but ultimately the whole community, to create a sustainable income, without having to abandon their fields.
We bottle MOZaic Marula Oil products in both Mozambique and Johannesburg and have agents selling our product range in Southern Africa. Our depo is in Roodepoort from where we ship all our orders. All the income generated goes towards the expansion of the cooperation to generate more and sustainable income for rural communities. Many South Africans are now also earning an income through sales an marketing of our product range. The main production season on dry lands is from October to February. The marula fruit start to mature in February in Mozambique. Leaving the farmers with enough time and opportunity to produce staple foods from dry lands and then start harvesting marula fruits for extra sustainable income. We started buying raw marula kernels in 2015 from two communities and the initiative expanded to five communities by 2019. More than 200 women are earning an income including five community leaders who are managing the procurement of kernels and do quality control in these communities. We have two fulltime staff managing the marula oil press and filtering process and another staff member is doing the administrative work and financial management, part-time.
