A neodymium magnet-also known as NdFeB, NIB, or Neo magnet-is a type of permanent magnet composed of an alloy of neodymium, iron, and boron, forming the Nd Fe B tetragonal crystalline structure. These magnets are the most widely used rare-earth magnets due to their exceptional magnetic strength.
Developed independently in 1984 by General Motors and Sumitomo Special Metals, neodymium magnets are the strongest commercially available permanent magnets. They have largely replaced other types of magnets in various applications requiring strong permanent magnets, such as electric motors in cordless tools, hard disk drives, and magnetic fasteners.
NdFeB magnets can be classified into two categories based on the manufacturing process:
- Sintered Magnets: Produced by melting raw materials, casting into molds, pulverizing, and sintering into dense blocks. These magnets are then heat-treated, cut to shape, surface-treated, and magnetized.
- Bonded Magnets: Created by melt-spinning a thin ribbon of the NdFeB alloy, pulverizing it into particles, mixing with a polymer, and molding into magnets.
