HOW TO USE:
- In a drink: stir 1 teaspoon into 250ml of water or juice and drink it straight away, before it thickens, then follow with a second glass of water. Always take with plenty of liquid and never take it dry.
- In smoothies: 1 teaspoon adds body - drink promptly as it keeps thickening.
- In baking: start at 1-2 tablespoons per loaf of gluten-free or low-carb bread; it gives the dough structure.
- As a vegan egg replacer: 1 teaspoon stirred into 3 tablespoons of water and left to gel. Start with a small amount and increase gradually if you are new to added fibre.
STORAGE:
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Reseal after each use and always use a dry spoon.
SAFETY:
Always take with adequate liquid. Do not take it dry, and do not take it immediately before lying down. If you take medication, leave at least one hour before or two hours after. Speak to a healthcare professional before use if you are pregnant, nursing, taking medication, or have a swallowing difficulty or a diagnosed bowel condition. Keep out of reach of children. Allergens: none declared. May contain traces of nuts or sesame (shared facility).
WHY THIS SIZE:
Psyllium is used a teaspoon at a time for drinking and a tablespoon at a time for baking, so a small jar disappears quickly in a household that bakes low-carb bread. 500g covers both uses for months, costs less per gram than the small packs, and reseals so the rest stays dry.
GOOD TO KNOW:
Psyllium is sold either as whole husk - light, flaky, pale - or milled into a fine powder, and they are not interchangeable in a recipe. Powder is denser and absorbs faster, so a spoon of powder is far more fibre than a spoon of husk, and swapping one for the other in a bread recipe gives a dense, wet loaf. This pouch is whole husk; if a recipe specifies powder, use roughly two thirds of the volume. In baking, psyllium forms a gel that traps moisture and gives gluten-free and low-carb dough something to stretch against - it is what stops the crumb collapsing. Hydrate it in the recipe's water for a few minutes before mixing it into the dry ingredients.
