The story of Earl Grey dates back to the early 19th century. Charles Grey, the Second Earl Grey and British Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834, is widely believed to have received this uniquely flavoured tea as a diplomatic gift. One popular version tells of a Chinese tea master who added bergamot to black tea to offset the taste of mineral-rich water on Earl Grey's estate. The resulting tea was so well received by the Earl that it was shared among his guests and eventually replicated by British tea merchants.
Over time, Earl Grey became one of the most recognisable names in the world of tea, its elegant aroma and refined taste synonymous with grace and British tea culture. This classic version is unembellished yet deeply satisfying, offering a gentle citrus note that pairs effortlessly with the natural strength and fullness of quality black tea.
Serving suggestion:
We recommend brewing black tea with water at around 95 degrees Celsius. Steep the tea for approximately 3 minutes, then taste to see if the strength suits your preference. If you desire a stronger brew, you may steep it for another minute or two. Use a teapot with an infuser for best results. If a teapot is not available, an infuser ball, infuser cup, or a fine mesh strainer will also work well. For each serving, use about 3 to 4 grams of loose leaf tea, or roughly one teaspoon. This tea may be steeped a second time; simply extend the brewing time to draw out the remaining flavour.
