Sencha Fukujyu is a classic Japanese green tea from Shizuoka, a region renowned for its tea cultivation on the fertile slopes of Mount Fuji. The word Sencha means "steamed tea", referring to the traditional Japanese method of halting oxidation by lightly steaming the leaves soon after harvest. This process preserves the vivid green colour and vegetal freshness of the leaf, and gives Sencha its signature balance of umami, brightness, and gentle astringency.
Fukujyu translates as "fortune and longevity", a name often given to teas meant to bring good wishes and enduring enjoyment. This particular style of Sencha is a middle-grade offering, prized for its approachability, straightforward character, and dependable quality. It is a popular choice in Japan for daily consumption.
In Japanese culture, Sencha is more than a beverage - it is a symbol of everyday hospitality, mindfulness, and nourishment. Served at home, in restaurants, and even in business meetings, it represents warmth, clarity, and attentiveness. The tea itself pairs beautifully with the traditional Japanese diet, complementing dishes like grilled fish, pickled vegetables, and steamed rice.
The flavour of Sencha Fukujyu is bold and grassy with a deep green essence that green tea enthusiasts appreciate. Its slight astringency refreshes the palate, while its clean finish invites another sip. Beyond taste, Sencha is naturally rich in plant compounds like catechins and L-theanine, which are known to support calm focus and gentle vitality throughout the day.
Serving suggestion:
We recommend brewing green tea with water at around 75 degrees Celsius. Steep the tea for approximately 2 minutes, then taste to see if the strength suits your preference. If you desire a stronger brew, you may steep it for another minute or two. Use a teapot with an infuser for best results. If a teapot is not available, an infuser ball, infuser cup, or a fine mesh strainer will also work well. For each serving, use about 3 to 4 grams of loose leaf tea, or roughly one teaspoon. This tea may be steeped a second time; simply extend the brewing time to draw out the remaining flavour.
