Nigiro Taiwanese Red Jade Oolong is a remarkable tea that blurs the lines between oolong and black tea, offering a unique experience for those who appreciate depth, complexity, and tradition. Known locally as Red Jade, this tea originates from the Fulu Tea District in Taitung County, Taiwan, a region celebrated for producing bold, highly oxidised teas with distinctive character.
Red Jade Oolong is considered one of the most highly fermented teas within the oolong category, with oxidation levels reaching as high as 80 to 90 percent. This level of fermentation gives the tea its rich, brown leaf colour and deep, complex aroma, often drawing comparisons to black tea. In fact, its production combines the signature technique of oolong tea-stirring the leaves over gentle heat to shape and control oxidation-with the bold fermentation process typical of black tea.
For those interested in tea history, it is worth noting that what Asia traditionally calls Red Tea is referred to as Black Tea in the West, a naming quirk that reflects the colourful complexities of global tea culture. Red Jade Oolong is sometimes called the black tea of oolong, as it offers the body and colour of a fine black tea, yet maintains the rounded sweetness, floral undertones, and smooth mouthfeel that oolong enthusiasts cherish.
The result is a full bodied, highly aromatic tea with notes of fruit, subtle spice, and a lasting smoothness that invites slow, appreciative sipping. It is ideal for those who enjoy richer teas but still want to explore the layered refinement unique to Taiwanese oolongs.
Serving suggestion:
We recommend brewing oolong tea with water at around 85 degrees Celsius. Steep the tea for approximately 3 minutes, then taste to see if the strength suits your preference. If you desire a stronger brew, you may steep it for another minute or two. Use a teapot with an infuser for best results. If a teapot is not available, an infuser ball, infuser cup, or a fine mesh strainer will also work well. For each serving, use about 3 to 4 grams of loose leaf tea, or roughly one teaspoon. This tea may be steeped a second time; simply extend the brewing time to draw out the remaining flavour.
