A dense, low shrub with highly fragrant, light grey leaves covered in fine woolly hairs, Pteronia incana grows in deep silty soils across the Karoo and is the best-known species of Pteronia, a genus of small woody shrubs endemic to Southern Africa. It occurs all the way from East London in the Eastern Cape, through the Western Cape, to the Namibian border in the Northern Cape. Also known as Ash Bush, Fire-Bush, or Kraakbos ("crackle-bush") in Afrikaans, it has long been valued by the Khoi and San people of the region.

FRAGRANCE

Astringent and juniper-like, with a wild, herbaceous quality reminiscent of hyssop and a hint of resin. The flowerheads carry a surprising pleasant coconut note, layered beneath the plant's characteristic sharp, wild scent - distinctly evocative of the Karoo landscape it calls home.

Latin Name: Pteronia Incana

Family: Asteraceae

Common Indigenous Names: Ash Bush (English), Asbossie, Kraakbos, Bloubos, Laventelbos (Afrikaans).

Uses: As cited in reputable literature, Pteronia incana has demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, and has traditionally been used to support respiratory health - helping to ease influenza and fever, as well as kidney ailments and backache. Inhaling steam infused with the essential oil is traditionally used as an expectorant, helping to loosen phlegm and mucus.
