Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide (NaOH), is a powerful chemical commonly used to clear clogged drains.
Here's how it works and what you should know:
What Caustic Soda Does
Breaks down organic matter: It reacts with grease, hair, and food particles, dissolving them to clear blockages.
Generates heat: When mixed with water, it produces heat, which helps melt greasy clogs.
Recommended uses: Drains, Grease traps, Pipes, Sewers, Garage floors.
How to Use It Affectively for Drains
1. Boil water and pour it down the drain to loosen debris.
2. Mix caustic soda with cold water in a plastic container (1 tub of Soda in 1 litre of water).
(Add caustic soda to water, not the other way around, to avoid splashing.
3. Stir carefully until it dissolves and starts to fizz.
4. Pour the solution into the drain and let it sit for 20-30 minutes.
5. Flush with hot water to clear the loosened debris.
Safety Precautions
Caustic soda is highly corrosive and must be handled with care:
Wear gloves and eye protection
Never mix with other chemicals, especially acids or bleach
Add caustic soda to water, not the other way around, to avoid splashing
Ventilate the area to avoid inhaling fumes
Recommended uses: Drains, Grease traps, Pipes, Sewers, Garage floors.
