The Blow-Off Valve (BOV) is a pressure relief device located in the intake tract, designed to prevent the turbocharger's compressor from experiencing surge. When the throttle is closed rapidly, the airflow decreases quickly, leading to flow instability and pressure fluctuations. If surge occurs, it can eventually cause failure of the thrust bearings due to the excessive loads involved.
Blow-Off Valves utilize a combination of manifold pressure signals and spring forces to determine when the throttle is closed. In response to rapid throttle closure, the BOV vents excess boost from the intake tract to the atmosphere, thereby relieving pressure and helping to eliminate surge.
