The Ultra Edge Machete is a robust, full-tang machete engineered for demanding outdoor tasks, embodying the rugged spirit of South African craftsmanship from the Ultra-Edge brand. As part of their RV series of affordable yet reliable tools, this model stands out for its versatility in trail clearing, bushcraft, and survival scenarios. With a focus on durability and ease of use, the RV2080 is a staple for hikers, campers, and farmers in South Africa. While specific listings for the RV2080 are niche, it draws from Ultra-Edge's tradition of high-carbon steel blades designed to tackle thick vegetation without breaking a sweat.
Blade Design: The 42cm (16.5-inch) blade features a broad, curved profile for powerful chopping and slicing, with partial serrations near the base for enhanced cutting through fibrous materials like vines or rope. It's precision-ground for a factory-sharp edge that holds up well in wet conditions.
Material Construction: Forged from 1055 high-carbon steel with a black oxide or powder coating for superior rust resistance, the blade resists corrosion from humidity and sap-essential for South African's variable climates. The full-tang design ensures structural integrity, preventing blade separation during heavy use.
Handle: Ergonomic injection-moulded polypropylene or FRN (Fibre Reinforced Nylon) in high-visibility orange or black, providing a shock-absorbing, non-slip grip that stays comfortable during extended swings. Includes a lanyard hole for added safety and control.
Sheath and Accessories: Comes with a heavy-duty nylon sheath featuring a belt loop and MOLLE compatibility for easy carry on a pack or hip.
Overall Dimensions and Weight: Total length of 55cm (21.7 inches) with a lightweight build at around 800-900g, balancing power with portability for backpacking without excessive bulk.
The RV2080 excels in real-world bushwhacking, effortlessly slicing through 2-3 inch branches or dense undergrowth in a single stroke, thanks to its weighted balance and thin blade stock. Users in South African outdoor forums praise its edge retention for light to medium tasks, noting it outperforms budget imports in longevity, though it benefits from occasional honing with a mill bastard file for optimal performance. It's not suited for heavy logging like a dedicated axe, but shines in camp setup, trail maintenance, and even light food prep. In survival kits, its serrated section doubles as a saw for emergency shelter building, making it a go-to for 4x4 overlanders exploring the Drakensberg or Kruger.
The RV2080 offers excellent value, with reviewers highlighting its "no-nonsense" design that avoids gimmicks while delivering reliable cuts season after season. Maintenance is straightforward: Wipe down after use, apply light oil to the blade, and store in the sheath to prevent nicks.
For adventurers seeking a machete that's tough, affordable, and tailored to Southern Hemisphere challenges, the Ultra Edge RV2080 delivers uncompromised performance without the premium price tag. Backed by Ultra-Edge's commitment to local manufacturing, it's built to endure the elements and empower your next expedition. Whether carving paths through fynbos or prepping firewood at base camp, this machete proves that simple tools, when done right, are the most essential.
