  • High-quality wide-angle lens
A 28mm wide-angle prime lens offering an 75° angle of view on full-frame DSLRs. On EOS cameras with APS-C sized sensors it makes a great standard lens, offering the equivalent view to a 45mm lens on a full-frame camera.
  • Shoot in low-light conditions
A maximum aperture of f/2.8 permits hand-held photography in available light without the use of flash. Image stabilisation allows shutter speeds up to four stops slower than normal to be used without the risk of camera shake.
  • Fast, quiet autofocus
Canon’s ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) provides fast, near-silent focusing. Full-time manual-focus override permits fine adjustment without changing focus modes.
  • Close focusing
Get as near to your subject as 0.23m, and enjoy a dramatic wide-angle perspective.
  • Space- saving design
Weighing just 260g and measuring 68.4mm x 51.5mm in size, the EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM is a lens you can take everywhere. Great for travel, landscape and documentary photography.
  • Designed for great image quality
A seven-bladed circular aperture provides beautiful bokeh, while Super Spectra coatings reduce flare. The EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM classic prime-lens design minimises distortion and aberrations, which can degrade image quality.
  • Area of use
Perfect for landscape and travel photography and reportage applications, when a wide-angle field of view enables dramatic close-up shooting.

The Canon EF28mm f/2.8 IS USM lens gives a wide-angle view and, along with the EF24mm f/2.8 IS USM, is one of the first two wide-angle prime lenses to incorporate Canon’s Image Stabilizer (IS) technology.

The 28mm focal length is a general purpose, wide-angle view that provides a range of shooting options. While not as wide as a 24mm lens, it gives a good field-of-view that suits photojournalism and some landscape photography. It is also useful for environmental portraiture where you want to put the subject in context of the surroundings.

  • High-speed Ring USM AF
  • 4-stop IS mechanism
  • 7-blade circular aperture
  • f/2.8 maximum aperture
  • Glass Mold Aspheric lens element
  • Focus scale
  • 0.23m closest focusing distance
  • Full-time manual focus
  • Compact size and lightweight
  • Filter Size: 58mm

A 28mm prime lens is a highly versatile lens for photographers to have in their kitbags. It offers a good sense of perspective and separation between the subject and the background. It can be hard to use a prime lens well, but the results are worth the effort. This lens is very useful indoors as well – although wide, it is not so wide that it could lead to distortion and hence it works well for interior architectural photography.

The f/2.8 maximum aperture makes the lens great for low light shooting as it’s able to make the most of the available ambient light before forcing you to supplement the light with flash.

Both this lens and the Canon EF24mm f/2.8 IS USM lens, announced at the same time, represent a first for Canon wide-angle prime lenses – the inclusion of a 4-stop Image Stabilizer (IS) that will automatically detect panning and compensate accordingly. Combined with the fast maximum aperture, it allows the lens to be used in low light without needing to raise the ISO setting on the camera. The IS system also aids focusing in low light by presenting a static image to the focusing sensors within the camera body.

A close focusing distance of just 0.23m lets you get in close to your subjects and be part of the action, while still letting you provide context to your subjects with the wide-angle field-of-view.

At only 260g the lens is lightweight and is ideal for travelling photographers, where every gramme in the bag counts. A compact lens, it will not draw attention when shooting in a crowd.

The lens optical design features an aspheric, Glass Mold (GMo) lens element to ensure sharp, high contrast images across the frame. A 7-blade circular aperture provides pleasing out of focus highlights and attractive bokeh that makes subjects stand out from the background.

To ensure sharp, in-focus images, the lens is fitted with a ring-type USM autofocus motor for fast, silent focusing at all times. The addition of full-time manual focusing allows you to adjust focus manually without first having to switch to MF.

USM Autofocus:

A ring-type USM autofocus motor means you can focus quickly, near-silently and with precision. It also provides full-time manual focus so that you can adjust the focus with the focus ring, without first having to switch the lens to manual focus. This allows you to adjust the focus accurately to ensure it is exactly where you want it to be for the most creative control possible.

Distance Information:

For use with E-TTL II flash metering, this lens provides distance information back to the camera body to help refine the flash metering algorithms and ensure accurate flash exposures.

Super Spectra Coatings:

The Super Spectra coatings achieve two benefits – they cut down internal flare and ghosting when light reflects off the digital sensor, providing images with improved contrast. The coatings are optimised for each lens design, thus ensuring there is accurate colour balance across the entire EF lens range so that all lenses have a uniform colour response.
