An Introduction to Vintage Samoa Rugby T-Shirt
The Vintage Samoa Rugby T-Shirt is inspired by the great Samoa Rugby Union teams of the past. The 1995 Rugby World Cup was staged in South Africa. Samoa or as they were known Western Samoa were drawn in a group with England, Italy and Argentina. Much was expected of the Samoan team following their impressive tournament back in 1991.
The squad was once again led by Prop Peter Fatialofa. They included experienced New Zealand based forwards. The team contained such as Junior Paramore and Pat Lam. In the Backs, they had the explosive skills of the legendary Brian Lima and Fereti Tuilagi.
Samoa met Italy in the opening game at the Basil Kenyon Stadium. The stadium was in East London in front of 7,868 supporters. Although Italy put up as trong fight, eventually the Samoan teams power proved too strong for The Azzurri. Tries from Darren Kellett,Shem Tatupu and abrace of tries each from Brian Lima and George Harder. In addition, Darren Kellett also kicked 3 conversions and 2 penalties to make the final score Italy 18 Samoa 42.
Only three days later Samoa were in action again. They were up against a strong Argentina Rugby Union team led by Sebastin Salvat and containing Agustn Pichot at scrum half and winger Diego Albanese. In a closely fought game, Samoa just edged the match, winning 32 points to 26. Samoa scored three tries through Pat Lam, George Leaupepe and George Harder. Darren Kellett again contributed from the kicking tee with a conversion and five penalty goals.
The group decider was against England at Kings Park Stadium,Durban in front of a large 35,000 crowd. Samoa caused plenty of problems for the England team. But in the end, the English were more organised and disciplined in the 44 points to 22 victory. Samoa scored three excellent tries through Mike Umaga and a brace of tries fromIefata Fata Sini. Tupo Faamasino added a penalty and two conversions.
The result against England meant Samoa would play hosts South Africa. The match staged at Ellis Park in Johannesburg in front of 54,169 mainly springbok supporters. As always, Samoa gave a good account of themselves, but South Africas strength in depth and organisation over awed Manu Samoa by 42 points to 14. There were some highlights from the game with Shem Tatupu and Scrum HalfToetu Tu Nuualiitia getting over for tries. And Tupo Faamasino kicking both conversions. But the day belonged to the South Africans who went on to lift the Rugby World Cup following their dramatic win over New Zealand in the final.
