What’s the deal with CCA vs Solid copper cable?
The first thing most people notice is the big price difference between CCA and the solid copper. One should be very careful when considering what type of cable to use for an installation.
CCA stands for Copper Cladded Aluminium. The 4 pairs of cable are actually made from aluminium and not solid copper. It has a coating of copper around it, whereas the solid copper is just that, solid copper throughout the whole conductor, making it a much better conductor than the CCA.
We always advise our customers to make use of solid copper. It offers much better data rates over longer cable runs and PoE (power over Ethernet) will also experience less voltage drop than that of CCA due to having a lower resistance. Another advantage of copper over CCA is that it is a fair amount stronger in terms of tensile strength. It can also be bent more before the conductors break.
It is thus quite clear that for large installs, where network long-lasting quality is paramount, solid copper would be the way to go. For our customers where cost is the main consideration, CCA cable certainly offers a usable alternative to solid copper.
