Aberlour 18 Year Old Single Malt Scotch whisky is matured in a combination of American oak casks that were previously used to mature bourbon and Spanish oak casks that were previously used to mature Oloroso sherry. Oloroso sherry is a dark and nutty type of fortified wine, and the used Oloroso casks impart subtle yet sweet notes of dried fruits, caramel, plums, and cherries to the whisky and contribute an incredible layer of complexity.
Built by James Fleming, the Aberlour Distillery is one of the younger distilleries in Scotland, with many others dating back to the 18th century. Aberlour was the fruit of James Fleming's labour, and his ambition to build a distillery that was perfect in every manner and just the way he had desired to construct it. James had previously worked at the Dailuaine Distillery for 10 years, bringing a wealth of his knowledge to Aberlour.
Flavour notes of Aberlour 18 reveal initial notes of soft apricot and cream are offset by developing flavours of blackcurrant jam and sweet oak with a touch of honey. On the nose, Aberlour 18's aroma gives way to rich and complex notes of toffee and butterscotch combined with ripe peach and bitter orange. The Scotch whisky is presented in auburn gold colour with a very long and balanced, progresses from crème brûlée to a gentle oak flourish finish.
Aberlour 18 is a whisky that stands well on its own without the support of chasers, so either drink this neat or with a tiny splash of water. The whisky can also be savoured with a decadent dessert such as a rich chocolate torte or a creamy ganache cake
