In the early years, the badge only consisted of the three letters AMG:
A for Aufrecht, Hans-Werner (Founder)
M for Melcher, Erhard (Founder)
G for Großaspach (Birthplace of Aufrecht)
By 1990, the stripes were added to the badge.

The new AMG badge with the stripes is made up of the initial AMG letters and the stripes of the former Mercedes "Sportline” emblem. Sportline was the “Sports program“ for Mercedes-Benz vehicles prior to 1990 when the cooperation with AMG started.
