Across generations, different Helichrysum species known as Imphepho have held an important place in Southern African traditional practices, particularly in rituals involving cleansing, prayer, reflection and connection with the ancestors. Dried Imphepho has traditionally been used as an aromatic ritual plant by healers and elders, with its distinctive fragrance becoming part of moments of spiritual and personal reflection.
From the Land to Your Home
These aren't mass-produced botanical bundles.
The Imphepho used in these wands is personally cultivated and hand-harvested on a family farm in the Cape Agulhas region. A small patch is consciously tended and harvested by hand, allowing the plants to continue growing naturally rather than treating the land as a once-off resource.
Several times a year, we make the journey to the farm as a family. It's time spent outdoors, reconnecting with the land, caring for a small beehive, tending the Imphepho and simply slowing down.
That connection to the land is part of the product.
Once harvested, the Imphepho is carefully dried and individually bundled by hand, creating wands that retain the natural texture, colour and character of the plant.

The use of Imphepho as a ritual incense is deeply rooted in Southern African traditional knowledge. Historical and ethnobotanical sources describe its use in practices connected with ancestors, healing, prayer and spiritual reflection.

When Imphepho is harvested it is very important that it is done in a respectful and sustainable way.
How to use a Smudge Stick
Holding the smudge stick by the one end, use a lighter to ignite the tip. Blow out any open flames so that the leaves slowly smolder. Next, wave the smudging wand around a room, person, or objects to direct the fragrant, cleansing smoke.
Catch the ashes in a heat-resistant dish. Smudge sticks can be extinguished in a dish of sand and re-used many times. Of course, never leave burning smudges unattended.
