Spijker is named after the “stoetbul” (stud bull) of the late iconic South African wine celebrity Francis “Duimpie” Bayly. Duimpie, whose favorite hobby was cattle breeding, was our neighbour and a close family friend.
The Malbec grapes are sourced from the southern and northern slopes of the Bottelary Hills, as well as the Helderberg region, resulting in a wine of tremendous complexity.
On the nose, the Spijker Malbec boasts aromas of cherries and tobacco and has a deep blood plum colour. The palate is smooth, with fine tannins, luscious red fruits and a gentle acidity. This wine does not require maturation; it is ready to drink and as smooth as silk.
No bull can live on its own, and when we decided that Spijker needed a partner, the first name that came to mind was Bessie, the favourite cow of our neighbours, Hennie and Theresa, on whose property we make the wine.
The grapes, sourced from the Bottelary Hills’ southern slopes, yield a wine with a tropical fruit profile.
On the nose, it’s crisp, fresh, and zippy, with notes of fynbos herbaceousness and newly cut grass. The rich and generous mid palate bursts with flavours of grenadella, litchees, and melons.
