A tap, which can also be known as a directional coupler, is a splitter where one output leg has a stronger signal than the other.
The primary use of a tap is to allow a strong signal down the signal line to enable the line to run a long length. Connecting a tap means that the receivers along the way tap off the main line and get the proper signal, not too strong and not too weak.
