Vitamin B1, is a water-soluble vitamin found naturally in some foods, added to foods, and sold as a supplement. Vitamin B1 plays a vital role in the growth and function of various cells.
Benfotiamine is a lipid-soluble derivative of vitamin B1. The increased lipid solubility of benfotiamine allows it to penetrate nerve cells more easily. After oral intake, benfotiamine shows increased bioavailability compared with an equivalent dose of water-soluble vitamin B1.
Benfotiamine may, therefore, be a better option to treat vitamin B1 deficiency than its water-soluble counterpart.
