Curcumin reduces inflammation by inhibiting cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Curcumin also detoxifies the liver, protects the immune system and has blood thinning (anti thrombotic) effects.
Boswelia may reduce inflammation by preventing the formation of leukotrienes (molecules) in the body and it is these leukotrienes that have been identified as a cause of inflammation. This leukotriene inhibitory effect is due to the acids present in Boswelia that inhibit 5-lipoxygenase (5-LO), an enzyme that produces leukotriene. Studies show that Boswelia may be useful in treating osteoarthritis (OA) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
