While the filter has a capacity of up to 600 litres, this can be reduced by up to half if there are high levels of particles in the municipal or borehole water (Total Dissolved Solids or TDS).There are many sources of particles in water (TDS) – the main sources include rust, sediment and/or dissolved metals originating from the municipal or household water pipes. These particles can cause the filter to get blocked-up, which is why the flowrate of the water can sometimes become slower than normal. In severe cases the filter may become completely blocked as the water simply doesn’t have any more space to run through.

The reason for this is that the highly efficient hollow fibre membrane filters particles larger than 1 micrometre (such as micro plastics) and 99.99% of bacteria. The membrane has innumerable tiny pores and, similar to a sieve, only allows particles smaller than 1 micrometre to pass.
