London Irish T-Shirt Rugby Introduction

London Irish T-Shirt Rugby Vintage 1898 Navy design is inspired by the legendary Louis Magee. Who was instrumental in the growth of the London-based club. Since the clubs formation. London Irish has been one of the capitals leading rugby clubs. For well over a century. The teams new home is back in West London at Brentford.

The Brentford Community Stadium is just a few miles from London Irishs training base and spiritual home at Hazelwood, Sunbury. Also, it is an ideal location to be reached from the clubs traditional area in southwest London. For those who have begun following the team in the Thames Valley. And new rugby supporters from across the capital.

Louis Magee a London Irish Rugby Legend

It was of course Louis Magee. The star Irish rugby international was so influential in the clubs early history.

Magee first played international rugby for Ireland in the Home Nations Championshipof 1895. in an encounter with England. He played alongside his brother Joseph. But, Josephs international career ended after only two games. He played in only the first two matches of the 1895 season only.

Magee scored his first internationaltry in the game. And, although Ireland narrowly lost the opening game. It was an epic encounter with the old enemy. Magees form was such he was reselected for the next two games of the Championship. Unfortunately, Ireland lost both narrowly in two tight matches. This left Ireland end bottom of the table for the season.

4 Nations Success for London Irish Rugby star

However, in 1896 there was a turnaround in fortunes for Ireland. They beat both Wales and England. And then drew 00 with Scotland. This provided Ireland with its second Championship in three years. Magee played in all three games of the season making him a Championship-winning player.

Magee was approached by Johnny Hammond towards the end of the 1896 season. To see if he would be interested in joining the British Isles team on their tour of South Africa. Magee along with his brother James accepted the invitation.

Irish players had previously been poorly represented by the Lions. However, there was a notable contingent of Irish players chosen. These included Thomas Crean, Robert Johnston, and Larry Bulger. Also, Jim Sealy and Andrew Clinch. In addition Arthur Meares and Cecil Boyd.

Magee played in all four Test games against the South African Springboks. He was partnered with half-back Matthew Mullineux in the first Test. But, for the final three tests, he was accompanied by Sydney Pyman Bell the Cambridge University player. He played in fourteen of the 21 tour games.
