An Introduction to Retro Varsity Rugby T-Shirt Vintage Navy
The Retro Varsity Rugby T-Shirt is inspired by the history of the Varsity Match which was first staged in 1872.
Former Oxford University students Alfred Davenport and Arthur Lyon were selected to represent England Rugby team in their first International match against Scotland in 1871.
Arthur Lyon was born in West Derby, Lancashire. He attended Rugby School and then Oxford University. Also, he was one of ten Old Rugbeians to make their international debut on 27 March 1871 at Edinburgh. This was the first international rugby match. Scotland versus England. Also, Lyon played for both Oxford University and later for Liverpool.
Alfred Davenport was an Oxford local, born in the City. He too went to Rugby School and later Oxford University.Davenport represented and captained the Oxford University rugby side.
Varsity Challenge match Oxford v Cambridge
Following the success of the England v Scotland fixture, both Cambridge and Oxford sent officials to arrange a challenge match. A year later in 1872, the two teams played at The Parks, Oxford. The teams were made up of 20 a-side for the game with the hosts victorious in this inaugural meeting.
Since 1872, both Oxford and Cambridge have included some exceptional athletes in their ranks. In recent times Oxford have capped the likes of the 1987 Rugby World Cup captain. All Blacks skipper David Kirkplayed in the 1987 and 1988 Varsity Matches. This was after his international career ended and he took up a Rhodes Scholarship at Oxford.
Brian Smith represented Australia in the1987 Rugby World Cup. He played in 1988 and captained Oxford in the 1989 Varsity match. Also, Smith played international rugby for Ireland 1990 1991.
Former Wallaby Joe Roff played in the 2006 and 2007 Varsity Matches for Oxford. He played after retiring from professional rugby. In addition, All Black hooker Anton Oliver and Canada flanker, Stan McKeen played for the University.
Cambridge had former Wallaby Dan Vickerman and All Black centre Mark Ranby. Also, USA scrum-half Doug Rowe along with Wales and British Irish Lions centre Jamie Roberts.
