An Introduction to Vintage Canada Rugby T-Shirt
The Vintage Canada Rugby T-Shirt Retro Style is inspired by the history of the game in Canada.Rugby in Canada dates back to the 1860s. With the first game recorded in 1864 in Montreal between artillery men. Trinity College in Toronto in 1864 issued the first set of rules for the game of rugby inCanada. By 1868, the first club, the Montreal Football Club was formed.
In 1874, six years later the first North American international game took place in Cambridge, MA between McGill and Harvard Universities. Later in that year, Quebec and Ontario played the first inter provincial match in the country.
British Columbia played its first game in 1876. It played on Vancouver Island between members of the Royal Navy and the land forces. Ten years passed before rugby was played on the mainland. Then in 1889, the British Columbia Rugby Union was established.
Halifax Football Club was established in 1870 on the East Coast. Many clubs were formed in the 1880s and in 1890 and the Maritime Provinces Rugby Union began.
The Growth of the Game in Canada
The Prairies rugby was restricted to Winnipeg until the 1880s when the Moosomin clubs and North West Mounted Police formed to challenge St. JohnsCollege and Winnipeg. In 1892, the Manitoba Rugby Football Union was created. The North West Mounted Police in the 1890s introduced the game to Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Only in British Columbia and Nova Scotia from 1914 to 1919, were there enough teams to arrange matches. There was an active effort to keep rugby goingduring the war years.. The effort helped keep morale up amongst civilians and servicemen.
