The inspiration behind the wales rugby shirt polo
Our wales rugby shirt polo vintage style is inspired by the great wales rugby union players and teams of days gone by.
Wales were looking a really strong team going into the1971 five nations championship. Beaten by ireland in dublin the previous year, they narrowly lost out to france who they beat 11-6 in cardiff on points difference.
The team had talented players and featured a backline that not only featured in the great wales team of 1971. But also the majority of test places in the famous british irish lions test team that defeated the all blacks in the 1971 series. The half backs were gareth edwards at scrum hall and barry john at fly half. In the centre was arthur lewis of ebbw vale alongside the great john dawe. Ian hall, the aberavon player replaced lewis in the scotland game.
On the wings were two very different players. While on the right wing was the fleet footed gerald davies who possessed a mesmerising side step. On the left wing john bevan a powerful runner who seemed able to break would be tacklers at will. To complete the backline the fearless legendary full back j.p.r. Williams.
The first game of the championship was the old enemy england at the arms park in cardiff. The welsh team was far too strong and at half-time led 16-3. By full time theyd increase the score to 22-6. Both wingers scored. Gerald davies with two tries and john bevan the other. Goal kicking back row ford john taylor kicked two conversions and j.p.r. Williams a long range penalty goal.barry john also added two drop-goals.
Scotland at murrayfield
Scotland at murrayfield was the next hurdle to waless grand slam hopes. In the tightest game possible wales edged it by a single point 19-18. They managed to outscore scotland by four tries to two through gerald davies, gareth edwards, barry john and john taylor. Scotland were kept in the game by their goal kicking captain peter brown who despite missing two conversions kicked four penalty goals. Having been beaten by ireland the year before wales were focussed on revenge and in the end they comfortably won 23 points to 9. Gerald davies, once again with two tries and gareth edwards the other. Plus two conversions, two penalty goals and a top goal from barry john. In response ireland could only reply with two penalty goals from mike gibson.
On to paris and the decider. France were unbeaten after defeating scotland, the drawing 9-9 with ireland and 14-14 with england. Also, the match was played in front of 50,703 hostile french supporters at the stade olympique yves-du-manoir, colombes. It finished 9 points to 5 in waless favour. Gareth edwards and barry john scored tries and a lone penalty from barry john.
Wales won the triple crown for the second time in three seasons and the twelfth time overall, and completed the grand slam for the first time since 1952.
