Research undertaken byJohn Birch resulted in him finding the story of Emily Valentine. During her time a tPortora Royal School in Enniskillen, Emily Valentine played in a rugby match. She played alongside her brothers in 1887.She was the first Lady of rugby.
The womens game slowly developed over time.In the 1960s the ladies game finally began to put down roots in European universities. By 1962, the first recorded UK womens rugby union team appeared at Edinburgh University. Also, in 1963, female students participated in matches against male students in London. And in France University teams were formed in 1965.
Student Pioneers help spread Womens Rugby
As the pioneering students left university womens adult rugby began to evolve. Up to 1966, this trend was confined to charity matches usually between male and female teams. Also, the UKs Daily Herald newspaper included photographs of girls team training in 1965. Also at Tadley in Hampshire in 1966. On the 1st May 1968, the first fully documented and recorded womens club match took place. This match played in France at Toulouse Fmina Sports in front of thousands of spectators. Moreover, the success of the event led to the formation of the first national association for womens rugby union. This was named The Association Francaise de Rugby Femin in AFRF at Toulouse, in 1970.
