Beekeepers choice feeding stimulant is an emulsion of food-grade steam distilled lemongrass and spearmint essential oils.
Purpose: Use beekeepers choice feeding stimulant as appetite support during early spring, autumn and to bridge a period of nectar dearth.
Application: Add 5ml of beekeepers choice feeding stimulant to every 1lt of your cooled down sugar syrup when doing stimulative, supplementary or manipulative feeding of your honey bees.
Prepare your hives for spring & for pollination service:
– 6 to 8 weeks before any honey producing forage begins to flower (or in preparation for pollination service): Especially after a long winter when there were lack of food/nectar for bees – beekeepers will add 5ml of the beekeepers choice feeding stimulant to every 1l of light sugar syrup (1 sugar to 1 water)
– the light sugar feeding simulates the natural nectar flow – triggering the queen to start the brood production process. This will ensure that within a 6 week period the hive is at it’s optimal capacity and ready to produce honey when the flowers open up
– the advantage of preparing your hive before the nectar flow windows open up is that the bees would bring home the nectar and store it as a honey crop and it’s even possible to harvest more than once during the nectar flow window
– otherwise, the weak winter colony will wait for spring to arrive they will then spend a great deal of the limited nectar window time to eat the honey and grow into a stronger hive, reducing the amount of honey crop the beekeeper can harvest.
– when feeding light sugar syrup please ensure that a source of protein (either pollen patties or pollen supplement is available)
Prepare your hives when about to bridge a nectar dearth:
– one of the major causes of colonies absconding their hives is a shortage of food.
– before the winter period settles in, beekeepers feed their bees with a heavy sugar syrup solution (2 sugar to 1 water) that has 5ml of beekeepers choice feeding stimulant for every 1l of syrup
– the bees instinctively store heavy syrup for the winter period.
The advantage of essential oils for bees:
– lemongrass helps to improve colony health while the active ingredients in spearmint work well against varroa mites by blocking mite pores and disorienting them
– Helping the colony to resist some pathogens that may be transmitted by mites
– some beekeepers use the feeding syrup in combination with a screened bottom board so when the mites become confused and fall to the ground through the screen they are then also unable to climb back up into the hive.
Warnings:
– not for human consumption
– do not feed bees while honey suppers are on the hive since it might lead to honey adulteration
– to avoid robbing behavior of nearby colonies it’s advised to either feed at night or/and to reduce the hive entrances and to feed all colonies at the same time
