A jointer is a tool used for creating flat surfaces along with a piece of woodâ¬â¢s edges and faces. Most pieces of lumber are sold as rectangle boards, which can be custom cut into different lengths, widths, and thicknesses. However, when large pieces of wood are cut down to size, the surfaces are not even. A jointer works by flattening the faces and edges of the wood.
The piece is placed on the infeed table, where it passes over steel cutting blades, and then is pushed out the outfeed table. This process is repeated until all the sides are smoothed out. Perfectly even faces are much more attractive than uneven ones, but jointers are primarily used to ensure two pieces of wood can be joined together without any problems.
