What Do The NIJ Protection Levels Mean?
Not all body armour is created equally though. The threat levels for ballistic vests are set by the NIJ (National Institute of Justice). There are currently five levels in use – Level IIA, II, IIIA, III, and IV – and each covers a different calibre of bullet.
NIJ Level III Body Armor
Rifle-defeating armour
Level III body armour is the first level that protects against rifle rounds. This armour usually consists of hard plates as opposed to soft plates, so it’s not concealable.
What are PE plates?
Polyethene (UHMWPE) Plates
PE or Polyethylene is essentially thermoplastic. Polyethene armour is made by bonding unidirectional Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene Fibers over the High-Density Polyethylene sheet.
Polyethene is the most common type of plastic used in the world today. Body armour is generally made from a specific kind of polyethene, called Ultra-High-Molecular-Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). The UHMWPE is rated as the most durable thermoplastic produced.
