The ZWO ASI678MC is loaded with the Sony IMX678 back-illuminated, 8.29 megapixel image sensor. The 1/1.8″ sensor has an array of 3840 x 2160 pixels that are 2um square. With a 12bit ADC, super low read noise of 0.6e, and high sensitivity, the ZWO ASI678MC would make a great camera for microscopy as well as astronomy! This is considered an upgraded version of the ASI178MC.

From the Sony IMX678 sensor with Starvis 2 technology that allows for back-illumination, as well as low readout noise with high sensitivity, this camera is great for planetary, solar, and lunar imaging.

Sony IMX678AAQR1-C CMOS Sensor with Starvis 2
The ASI678MC features the Sony IMX678 sensor. An improvement on the IMX178, the 678 has 8.29 megapixels and a 3840 x 2160 resolution. Starvis 2 technology provides back illumination with zero amp glow and lower dark current noise.

Readout Noise
Check out the graph to the left to see readout noise and other specifications. The ASI678MC features low read noise and a high dynamic range. The built-in HCG mode is able to effectively reduce readout noise at high gain to maintain a similarly high dynamic range as it does at low gain. The HCG mode turns on automatically when gain reaches 182. Readout noise is as low as 0.8e, with the dynamic range reaching a level close to 12 bit.

Quantum Efficiency
Quantum efficiency (QE) and readout noise are important specifications for an astrophotography camera, as they are indicative of camera performance. Higher quantum efficiencies and lower readout noise specifications indicate better performance. As shown on the graph to the left, the ASI678 has a peak quantum efficiency of 83%, which is a roughly 3% improvement from the 178.

ASIair Plus Camera Control (sold separately)
There is a wireless camera control solution available for this camera, and it’s called the ZWO ASIair Plus. This small wireless module allows you to focus, take images, make adjustments with your smartphone or tablet, and even do plate solving and computerized mount control with the built-in SkySafari bridge. If you’d like to add an ASIair Plus to your camera order, you can find it in the suggested accessories section.
