Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate/P-5- P is the active component of Vitamin B-6 which is used in all metabolic transactions. Vit B-6 exists in nature in 3 major chemical forms: pyridoxine, pyriodoxal and pyridoxamine. Pyridoxine is water soluble and stable in heat and acid mediums, while it is unstable in alkaline solutions and light. Pyridoxine and its vitamers are absorbed in the upper small intestine. The functions of P-5-P:
Your body requires P-5-P for various functions including muscle growth and repair, neurotransmitter functions and energy metabolism. As a coenzyme, P-5-P also participates in many chemical reactions and catalyses the conversion of many substances in your body.
Vit B-6 is a cofactor for more than 50 different enzymes. It is involved in amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolism and plays a role in the action of steroid hormones.
P5P plays a fundamental role in amino acid metabolism, heme biosynthesis (heme is an iron-containing molecule that is important for many biological processes), neurotransmitter biosynthesis, collagen formation and glucocorticoid action.
It is involved in balancing sodium and potassium levels by regulating the electrical functioning of your nerves, heart, and musculoskeletal system.
P5P assists in building and breaking down amino acids (protein building blocks) changing one amino acid to another (transaminase reactions).
It releases stored energy from your liver and muscles, and it facilitates in the production of antibodies and red blood cells.
It is involved in the formation of neurotransmitters and hormones.
Low levels of P-5-P can result in anaemia.
Carpal Tunnel syndrome – the appears to be a direct correlation between carpal tunnel syndrome and a deficiency in P-5-P. (Treatment requires 100-200mg daily for 12 weeks.)
PMS, depression, anxiety pain perception, can all benefit from P-5-P.

Antituberculosis drugs.
Anti-parkinsonian drugs.
