Gaggia Classic Pro Home Espresso Machine – Black

The Gaggia Classic was first released in 1991 and quickly became one of the most popular domestic espresso options on the market. It has been through many iterations over the years, but with the release of the current ‘Pro’ version in 2019, Gaggia re-established this machine as one of the top choices for aspiring home baristas on a budget.

The biggest upgrade to this version of the Classic is an improved steam wand with a two hole tip. It provides good pressure for such a small machine, enough to practice latte art at home. Among the other important features of this new version is a 3 way solenoid valve. This helps to release pressure from the group head after pulling a shot. All higher end and commercial espresso machines have this feature, but many entry-level home machines don’t. Lack of a solenoid valve can result in sloppy pucks and lots of cleanup.

Because it has a three way solenoid valve and proper steam wand, you can make espresso-based drinks on the Gaggia Classic like you would on a higher end machine, including cappuccinos, flat whites and many others. The Gaggia Classic also has a 58mm group head, like higher end and commercial machines. This means that you can use readily available accessories such as tampers and filter baskets from other manufacturers.

The Gaggia Classic comes both with pressurised portafilter baskets, like lower end machines, and a “proper” espresso basket that does not add pressure. The pressurised baskets are made to help you produce crema with pre-ground, stale, or too coarsely ground coffee, but for best results, we would recommend pairing the Gaggia Classic with a dedicated espresso grinder.
