An example of an abrasive tool used for grinding, cutting, or shaping various materials, such as metal, stone, or concrete, is a #30 grinding wheel. It is a small, wheel-shaped instrument with a 30 inch diameter and a few millimeters of thickness. The abrasive particles on the wheel’s surface are often comprised of silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, or diamond and are intended to gradually wear away over time to reveal new, sharp particles. The number 30 designates the degree of grit on the surface of the wheel; lower numbers denote a greater degree of grit, and higher numbers a lesser degree of grit.
